Best Time To Drink Coffee

Most people drink coffee first thing in the morning. Science suggests thats not the optimal time.

Why Not First Thing In The Morning

Your body produces cortisol naturally when you wake up. Cortisol is a hormone that makes you alert. It peaks between 8-9 AM for most people.

Drinking coffee during peak cortisol times does two things:

  • Wastes the caffeine (cortisol is already waking you up)
  • Builds tolerance faster (your body adjusts to caffeine + cortisol)

The Best Time: Mid-Morning

Cortisol dips around 9:30-11:30 AM for most people. This is when coffee works best. The caffeine fills in where cortisol drops off, giving you a genuine boost rather than doubling up on alertness you already have.

The Afternoon Sweet Spot

Cortisol drops again between 1-2 PM. A second cup here can beat the afternoon slump. But be careful with timing—you dont want caffeine in your system when your trying to sleep.

The Caffeine Cutoff

Caffeine has a half-life of about 5-6 hours. That means half of it is still in your system 5-6 hours after drinking. For most people, cutting off coffee by 2 PM ensures it wont interfere with sleep.

If your sensitive to caffeine, make your cutoff even earlier—noon or 1 PM.

What About Working Out?

Coffee 30-60 minutes before exercise can improve performance. It increases alertness, reduces percieved effort, and helps you push harder. Just factor this into your daily caffeine timing.

Listen To Your Body

These are guidelines, not rules. Some people function fine with coffee at 6 AM. Others feel jittery with afternoon caffeine. Pay attention to how you feel and adjust accordingly.

The Simple Schedule

For optimal caffeine use:

  • First cup: 9:30-11:30 AM
  • Second cup (if needed): 1-2 PM
  • Cutoff: 2 PM at the latest

Try it for a week. Most people notice they need less coffee overall while feeling more alert.
