Immersion brewing extracts differently than percolation. You control it by steep time, not by grinding finer. With espresso beans in a French press, you actually taste the origin and roast intention better than you would in drip. The body is heavier, the bitterness is controlled, and you get sweetness back. This is where I’d use those Italian blends.
Pour-over works if you slow-pour deliberately. Using a gooseneck kettle and a pour-over cone — Hario V60, Melitta, Chemex — you can manually control extraction by managing pour rate and temperature. With espresso beans, slow pouring, about 30 seconds total pour time per brew cycle, prevents over-extraction and actually lets darker roasts show complexity. It’s more labor than drip, but the result is noticeably better.
Turkish coffee is an underrated option. If you’ve got a cezve or ibrik — that small Turkish coffee pot — and a burr grinder that goes fine, Turkish brewing uses very fine grind and very short contact time, similar to espresso. You’re heating coffee grounds and water together, then pulling it off heat before full boil. The result is intense, concentrated, and proper for dark roasts.
